Guest Post – 7 Ways to Stay Healthy on Holiday

Todays guest poster is the lovely Estelle from Strong In a Thong.  Estelle is a cross fit coach, fitness enthusiast and all round champion of womens health.  Today she’s giving her top tips for staying on that health & fitness wagon while you’re on holiday!

Over to Estelle!

I have being traveling for the past nine months, and whenever I hear people say that they’ll “get back on the wagon when they get home” I wince a little. Don’t wait till you get home. It is completely possible to stay in shape AND still have fun on vacation.

I am not super-human. I love chocolate and I love trying new treats in new countries! I have though, created a little mini system to make it almost impossible for me to avoid working out on vacation. I will admit that it helps tremendously that my boyfriend and I hold each other accountable but anyone can commit.

This is my bulletproof plan to make sure I don’t come home ten pounds heavier!

Carry Health Snacks on you ALWAYS

We tend to make bad food decisions when we are hungry and don’t have any other options. If I am on a three hour flight from Bali to Vietnam,  and the Air Asia lady swings by with her goodie cart – I am ten times more likely to ask for a Kit Kat bar – if I don’t have some nuts in my bag. So what do I do? I BRING NUTS. And when I forget? I buy the Kit Kat bar. Don’t make the same mistake!

Book a Hotel with a Gym

Even if you don’t think that you’ll go – just do it. If you have the option, it will make it that much harder to slack off. If you are traveling with someone, pinky-promise each other to go at least a few times during your stay. After you go once, you’ll feel great and want to go again. Sometimes it just takes a few more “searches” on Expedia or to find a hotel with a gym. Worth the extra time to save some unwanted flab!

Pack Those Gym Shoes

I don’t care if you are going to a place where you don’t think there will be a gym, you won’t be hiking and there is a 99% you won’t even have the time to work out. There is still that one percent! Bring your gym shoes. Why? They are a HEAVY reminder that you need to work out. When you’ve lugged around your pair, (usually dangling from my backpack) you are reminded that you brought them for a reason. That, or you end up feeling guilty that you’ve hauled them across the globe and haven’t used them. Not only are your sport shoes important to work out in, they are also crucial for long days of exploration! You only have two pairs of knees – give them the support they need.

Plan Active Holidays

Before I set out on a trip, I always try to find a few holiday activities that are active. Whether it is a volcano hike, or a zip lining day – I plan beforehand to solidify some movement in my holiday. Don’t like running up mountains like me? That’s fine. Love shopping? Great. Start from the furthest point away from your destination and walk the entire day. Any movement is better than none.

Set an Alarm On Your Phone

I set my alarm on my phone that says “WORKOUT”. A nice little reminder that I need to get my butt out of that hotel bed and out. Sometimes I don’t work out that day, but it’s constantly on my mind because a physical alarm went off. It may seem like a pain to do, but setting yourself up for success is important to staying on the wagon.

Carry a Water Bottle

Sometimes we think that we are hungry when we are actually thirsty! When you are visiting temples and walking around all day, you’re bound to get dehydrated. Avoid eating mindlessly by mistaking your thirst for hungry. I carry around a water bottle and fill it up whenever I can. I have always been horrible at drinking enough water, so keeping a bottle on me keeps me on point.

Your Body is Your Gym

But I checked on Expedia AND and I couldn’t find a hotel in my price point that has a gym.! That is not an excuse! Your body is plenty of weight to create a solid workout that will have you huffing and puffing in no time. I am a huge fan of bringing a jump rope. They are light to pack and can have you sweating in no time. Jump rope accompanied with some squat jumps, burpees and sit-ups? Killer workout.

So! The next time you book a plane ticket to go on vacation – go through this list. Being prepared allows you to avoid falling off the wagon. If you have worked so hard to look good for that vacation, it is such a waste to let it all fall apart once you get there! Plan ahead and don’t let failure even be an option.

Love this! Great tips there Estelle! It is like when people say they will start their diet “tomorrow”. I am all about taking a rest week, if it lines up with your plans, but often, you will enjoy your holiday so much more if you get up early, exercise, and can enjoy the rest of the day. If you run, you also get to explore new surroundings :)

You have made me excited about going on holiday now :)

Thanks Tina! Being a third-culture-kid and always being on the go – I HAD to figure out a way to stay healthy!

And don’t get me started about the “I’ll start on Monday” ;)

Glad you’re excited about holiday! I strive to make every day a holiday for me :)

      Best, E

Great tips Estelle! Holidays and vacations are fun but they don’t need to be FULL on splurges. I always know I can get in a quick tabata workout with body weight no matter where I am just need 1/2 an hour!

I love tabata work! I should have added that to my blog entry :) Such a great way for people to get in a workout because it goes by quickly and is almost like a little game! Love it!

Once dreaded for having high levels of cholesterol, whole eggs are regaining their relevance as a food for weight loss. New studies now indicate they do not affect blood cholesterol adversely and neither cause heart attacks. Whole eggs offer an easy diet to lose weight. They are high in healthy fats and protein and can make a person feel full while having taken just low amounts of calories for Weight Loss Diet. Eggs are known to have high density of nutrients and can supply all the required content of nutrition for someone taking a calorie-restricted diet.
